Volkswagen XL1 Headed for Geneva Motor Show
Good news: The Volkswagen XL1 is headed to the Geneva Motor Show in just a few weeks! The production version of the plug-in hybrid is slated to take the stage at the show, and once it hits the streets, it will be the most fuel-efficient and aerodynamic car in the world. There simply are no competitors able to match the XL1’s 270 mile per gallon accomplishment!
The VW XL1
The figure is staggering, and 270 mpgs certainly makes 35 seem like a cruel reality. The burning question will revolve around pricing, which VW has not officially released. Any vehicle with fuel economy figures like that is going to attract the masses. After all, it seems that fuel will soon cost more than gold…or at least it feels that way at the pump. VW has announced that there will be just 50 units produced initially, and that they will feel out the demand after for possible future runs.
The VW XL1 is a sleek 2-seater that closely resembles its concept form, which is semi-rare. The fully covered rear wheels give it a futuristic appeal and the mirrors are integrated into the door skin, it is a land shark. It boasts a 0.189 coefficient of drag, and goes way heavy on the carbon fiber.
Under the hood of the XL1:
- An 800-cc two-cylinder diesel engine (47 horses) paired with a 27 horsepower electric motor.
- 7-speed dual-clutch transmission
- Lithium-ion battery pack
- This car requires just 8.3 horses to cruise at a steady 62 miles per hour
- It can travel about 30 miles on electric power only
- The 0-60 jump is accomplished in 12.7 seconds
- Top speed is limited to 99 miles per hour
- The 2.6-gallon fuel tank gives it a range of 700 miles
Scissor doors add further styling for the XL1
The XL1 will hand-built at the VW plant in Osnabrück, Germany, which also builds the VW Golf convertible and the Porsche Boxster.
