Volkswagen Golf R Cabriolet Pricier than A Porsche Boxster

The new Volkswagen Golf R Cabriolet is shockingly more expensive than a Porsche Boxster. The VW Golf starts around $57,000 and a Porsche can be had for $57,000. While this may seem insane, the Golf is certainly a quality drop-top and is based on the underpinnings of the Golf VI.

Would you prefer a VW Golf convertible or a shiny Porsche Boxster? Perhaps a Lotus Elise?

The Volkswagen Golf convertible has become uber-popular because it is sporty, zippy and, of course, takes its top off in public. The pricing for the entire line of VW products has been inching up over the years, along with quality. VW is not a company to dive into something blind, however, so they likely have tested their desired market prior to production and marketing endeavors.

The Boxster is not the only cabriolet the Golf R out matches or closely matches on the pricing scale. Here are a few more contenders that the Golf convertible inadvertently hits head on:

  • Audi A5 2.0 TFSI Quattro ($59,000)
  • BMW 325i Cabriolet ($47,000)
  • BMW 135i Sport Plus Edition ($36,000)
  • BMW Z4 ($47,000)
  • Lotus Elise ($55,000)
  • Mercedes-Benz SLK ($41,000)
  • Mercedes-Benz E-Class Cabriolet ($59,000)
  • Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG ($57,000)
  • Nissan 370Z roadster GT ($43,000)
  • You could own a Ferrari 348 for around $35,000

Should VW align its pricing with supercars like Ferrari, Lotus or Porsche? Is the brand aiming to go exclusively exotic or will it maintain a line of affordable daily drivers for the masses?

Porsche

It seems that Volkswagen is pitting itself up against a new class of larger, faster and more luxurious rivals via its pricing. Is this a sign of the future direction of VW as a brand?
