Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles appear to be the future for Volkswagen, but will the buyers be ready or will they be wary? Issues like range anxiety are a real factor in the market and buying process. That does not mean there are not methods to win buyers over, however. Recently BMW hinted at a loaner program. The BMW loaner program provides buyers of the BMW i3 a free gasoline loaner car to use for trips that surpass the 80-100 mile range of the hybrid.

Volkswagen and other brands offering electric cars and hybrid options may be planning similar programs to ease the electric shock for buyers.

The news of the 6 upcoming hybrids came from Oliver Schmidt, GM of engineering and environmental office for VW. Schmidt spoke at the recent SAE 2013 Hybrid & Electric Vehicle Technologies Symposium, where he shared that the brand will release the models across its brands.

Schmidt was a bit vague regarding exactly which VW brands would release hybrids, but expect a plug-in Passat and plug-in hybrid Golf. There will also be at least an electric Audi in the mix. Currently, VW is producing the following hybrid models that could get plugged in:

  • VW Touareg
  • VW Jetta
  • Porsche Cayenne S
  • Porsche Panamera S
  • Audi Q5

The Audi A6 and A8 hybrids are in pre-production, and have the potential to merge as well. Volkswagen’s futuristic XL1 concept hit the Geneva Motor Show this month, where a limited run of 250 units was announced.
